Becoming a Certified Pharmacy Technician

To apply for registration, applicants should visit the Board of Pharmacy’s eLicense website, which can be found at elicense.ohio.gov. All individuals performing the duties of a pharmacy technician, must have an active registration before performing such duties. Applications with a pending, submitted, or "in review" status do not allow individuals to perform technician duties.

All pharmacy technician applicants must obtain the required criminal records check by submitting fingerprints to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and FBI via a WebCheck provider located in Ohio. Certified technicians must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma, GED, or foreign school diploma equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma. Applicants must provide identification and a diploma. Certified Pharmacy Technician applicants who completed their primary/high school education outside of the United States are required to submit evidence of English proficiency. Certified technicians must have completed an approved technician training program. They must be sure to upload training documents upon completion. For more information on approved training programs, please review this document.

A certified pharmacy technician must hold a current certification from ExCPT or PTCB . Applicants will be asked to upload a copy of certification verification. For PTCB certification verification click here. For ExCPT certification verification click here.

The application review process normally occurs within 10-15 business days of submission. If approved, applicants will receive a Certificate of Issuance notice and an active status. Registration is valid until September 30th of each even numbered year.
