Becoming a Pharmacy Technician Trainee

To apply for registration, applicants should visit the Board of Pharmacy’s eLicense website, which can be found at elicense.ohio.gov. All individuals performing the duties of a pharmacy technician, must have an active registration before performing such duties. Applications with a pending, submitted, or "in review" status do not allow individuals to perform technician duties.

All pharmacy technician applicants must obtain the required criminal records check by submitting fingerprints to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and FBI via a WebCheck provider located in Ohio. Unless part of an Ohio Public High School training program, pharmacy technician traineess must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma, GED, or foreign school diploma equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma. Applicants must provide identification and a diploma.


If the applicant is a part of an approved high school technician training program, they are permitted to register when they are 17 years old. A list of approved high schools can be found www.pharmacy.ohio.gov/highschooltechtraining.


Pharmacy Technician Trainee applicants who completed their primary/high school education outside of the United States are required to submit evidence of English proficiency. For more information on English proficiency requirements, please review this guidance document.


The application review process normally occurs within 10-15 business days of submission. If approved, applicants will receive a Certificate of Issuance notice and an active status.

PLEASE NOTE: Once active, registration is valid for 18 months. A trainee may request an extension of registration by submitting the Trainee Extension Request Form at least 14 days in advance of the Trainee’s expiration date.
