STATE BOARD NEWS -- NOVEMBER 2000 ISSUE

[State Section Only]

THE BOARD GETS A NEW MAILING ADDRESS

Even though we have not moved, the United States Postal Service has changed the Board's mailing address to:  77 South High Street, Room 1702; Columbus, Ohio 43215-6126.  We now have a room number rather than a floor number and we have a new Zip Code+4.   This change is effective immediately.  Please change your records and begin using this new address because the Postal Service will be phasing out the use of the 43266 Zip Code that was unique to State of Ohio offices.

STATE BOARD NEWSLETTER CONTINUING EDUCATION INSERTS

Some pharmacists are confused regarding the continuing education programs that have been sponsored by Glaxo and inserted into the Ohio newsletter.  In particular, we have received many questions about whether or not they can be used for Board-approved Jurisprudence program credit.  These continuing education programs are provided as a service by Glaxo and may certainly be used to meet the general continuing education requirement, depending on the program coding.  TO DATE, HOWEVER, NONE OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE APPROVED FOR USE TO MEET THE BOARD’S JURISPRUDENCE REQUIREMENT.  ONLY THE QUIZZES IN THE FEBRUARY NEWSLETTERS RELATING TO THE PREVIOUS YEAR’S NEWSLETTERS THAT WERE DEVELOPED BY BOARD STAFF HAVE COUNTED FOR JURISPRUDENCE CREDIT.  If you will review the program number on many of them, you will find that the number ends with the code H04.  This should automatically tell you that they do not meet the requirement.  From the last newsletter, you may remember that jurisprudence programs must first end in H03, L03, or C03 and then be approved prior to their use in meeting the continuing education requirement for Board-approved Jurisprudence.  If you have any questions about the continuing education requirements, please contact the Board office before the renewal process begins next summer.

PHARMACY INTERNSHIP NOTES FOR INTERNS AND PRECEPTORS

Please remember that all internship hours worked in calendar year 2000 must be submitted to the Board office before March 1, 2001.  Every year, we have a number of interns who wait until the middle or end of February to call their preceptors about getting the Practical Experience Affidavit (PEA) form filled out and mailed to the Board office.  For the preceptors, this usually means that payroll records have to be reviewed, the hours worked by the intern have to be totaled, the form needs filled out and notarized, and then the form needs mailed to the Board office before March 1.  For the intern to expect the preceptor to do this within a couple of days while the preceptor is trying to meet his/her job commitments is unrealistic.  The Board will not accept any hours submitted late unless the fault for the late filing is due in no part to the intern.  Interns whose hours are received late because they waited until the last minute to contact their preceptors will not qualify for this exemption.

The solution is very simple.  There is no requirement that all of the calendar year 2000 hours have to be submitted all at once on one PEA form.  Neither is there a limit on the number of forms that may be submitted.  If the intern worked over the summer and then went back to school in the fall, submit the summer’s hours immediately.  Then, if the intern works over the Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays, submit another form with those hours.  If the forms are submitted in this manner, the intern will not lose credit for any of the hours worked.  If there are any questions about the internship requirements, please feel free to contact the Board’s Director of Internship, Bill McMillen, at the Board’s office.
