STATE BOARD NEWS -- AUGUST
2000 ISSUE (State
Section Only) |
TIME TO RENEW
YOUR LICENSE
Pharmacist and pharmacy
intern identification cards expire on September 15th. By the time you receive this newsletter, you should have received
your renewal form in the mail. If you
have not received a renewal form yet, call the Board office immediately. If you have received the form, but have not
yet returned it to the Board office, please do so as soon as possible so that
we can try to get your new identification card to you before September 15th. Remember that if your renewal is not in
the Board office PRIOR to September 15th, you may NOT practice
pharmacy until you are renewed.
If your pharmacist license
number begins with 03-3-, you are required to report your continuing pharmacy
education (CPE) this year. This year
you are required to report 4.5 C.E.U.s (45 hours) of continuing pharmacy
education. 0.3 C.E.U.s (3 hours) are
required to be in Board-approved Jurisprudence. The other 42 hours may be in any area of study, as long as you
have valid certificates of participation in your possession. Only certificates obtained from an ACPE or
an Ohio-approved provider are considered to be valid. If you send your renewal form and CPE report form to the Board
office prior to September 15, the certificates must be dated on or after
July 1, 1997 to be valid. If your
renewal form is not in the Board office prior to September 15, you will be
audited and you must also include the original certificates of participation
for all of your reported CPE. In
addition, if you renew after September 15, your certificates of
participation must be dated on or after the date that is three years prior to
the date your renewal and reporting forms are received in the Board office
(e.g., if your renewal and reporting forms arrive in the Board office on
October 1, 2000, your certificates of participation must be dated on or after
October 1, 1997).
Those pharmacists whose
license numbers begin with 03-1- will report next year (Summer, 2001). PLEASE NOTE –In 2001, the CPE requirements
increase to 6.0 C.E.U.s (60 hours) over the three-year reporting period. Pharmacists will still be required to show
the 0.3 C.E.U.s (3 hours) of Board-approved Jurisprudence. In addition, however, they will also have the
requirement that 4.5 C.E.U.s (45 hours) must be in patient care-related CPE.
A pharmacist can easily
determine the classification of their individual CPE programs by looking at the
program number. For both ACPE and
Ohio-approved provider programs, the numbers should end with a three character
suffix consisting of a letter and two digits.
The letter will be either ‘L” for a live presentation, an “H” for a home
study (correspondence) course, or a “C” for a combination of the two. The digits will be either “01” for patient
care-related programs, “02” for AIDS-related programs (ACPE only), “03” for
pharmacy jurisprudence-related programs, or “04” for other pharmacy management
programs. Thus, a live lecture on the
dosing and side effects of a particular antibiotic would end with the code
“L01” and it would be a patient care-related course. A program consisting of a written article that could be read at
home and an exam to be mailed in for credit about the adjustment of warfarin
dosing based on the INR results would end with the code “H01” and would also be
a patient care-related program. A
day-long symposium on AIDS by an ACPE provider that required attendance at the
live lectures plus completion of a take-home examination in order to get credit
would end with the code “C02”. This
also qualifies as patient care-related CPE.
Pharmacists should be aware
by now that every program classified by the provider as a jurisprudence program
(ending with the digits “03”) is not necessarily a program that meets the
Board’s jurisprudence requirements. The
Board’s intent when writing the rule that
requires pharmacists to obtain 0.3 C.E.U.s of Board-approved jurisprudence was
that pharmacists needed to maintain an awareness of new and changed laws,
rules, and regulations affecting the daily practice of pharmacy. Many programs that end with the digits “03”
are courses dealing with civil liability from medication errors, improper
instructions, and other such topics.
These are certainly important topics that have a valid role in a
pharmacist’s practice, but they do nothing to keep the pharmacist current on
topics such as labeling, transfer of prescriptions, and manner of issuance of
prescriptions to name a few. You should
check with the CPE provider to see if the program is a Board-approved program.
